Kermodei Bear

Split Mountain Adventures - Kermodei Bear Be on the lookout for our City’s mascot the Kermodei Bear, otherwise known as the Spirit Bear or more scientifically,
Ursus americanus kermodei. Known as Moksgam’ol by the Tsimshian people, the Kermodei is associated with hunting prowess and helping people faced with hunger.

This magical animal is the same in every respect as the black bear however, it carries one recessive gene that turns it’s coat from black to white. The Kermodei occurs in families as a white cub amongst a litter of black cubs or as a white parent with black or white cubs.

It’s home is Northwest British Columbia including Princess Royal and Gribbel Islands on the North coast, as well as, the Skeena and Nass areas.

The Spirit of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games:

The three mascots for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver were inspired by traditional First Nations creatures.  One of the mascots, Miga is a mythical First Nations sea bear that is part killer whale and part Kermodei Bear.  Miga is based on the legends of the Pacific Northwest First Nations of orca whales that transform into bears when they arrive on land.

Kermodei Bears are unique to British Columbia and symbolize the power and determination of athletes completing in the games.
